Set in the Montana Territory in the year of 1882, Goodnight, Montana follows the found family of three men: Rawhide, Le Lapin, and Reverend Glasseye. I would categorise it as a slice-of-life psychological western.

GNM is more of a fluid concept rather than a strict story. As it does not follow a defined plot, it's canon is patched together by illustrations and short stories (see "Writing"). While there is no technically defined protagonist, the story is written from a third-person limited perspective, generally focusing on Rawhide.

I wanted to move away from the clichéd macho cowboy or gunslinger Western. Instead, I sought to tell a human story within a Western frame, taking care to ensure historical accuracy, focusing on the characters' humanity, their uneven and ugly journey of redemption and the messy relationships they form along the way.

The characters are metaphorical depictions of the general three stages of recovery:
– Le Lapin, "the rabbit", represents denial; the living being. It exists only to keep existing, and runs because to stop would mean to face its own death.
– Rawhide represents process; the deceased being. Stripped of its skin, but not yet tanned. It is caught between what it was and what it’s becoming.
– Reverend Glasseye represents acceptance; the absence of the being, replaced by something artificial. The glass eye sees, but does not feel.

The project was created rather spontaneously on May 1st, 2025, for the sake of participating in Art Fight. However, I ended up growing to love these characters more than I had intended, becoming my longest-enduring story to date. Read more about its creation here.

Admittedly, the majority of the story's complexity will probably stay inside my head forever, though I do hope to record as much as possible on this website.
